Introduction

This project is from a module called GPS 1 (Game Project Studio 1), where it basically puts you in a project where it emulates the environment of working with a proper game development team.

My team consisted a total of 7 members including me, where I was selected to be the Design Lead.

The other members of the team included 2 more designers, 3 artists and 1 tech.

Design Process

Starting with the idealization phase of the game, one of the challenges given to us from the lecturers is to make the game unique by implementing a dual deck mechanic that is also non-number based.

The design department somewhat struggled in creating a working mechanic that also fits the narrative that we wanted. But at the end we were able to settle onto something that works, playing around with the idea of medical vs mystical.

The narrative of the game is inspired from a Malaysian cultural concept of shamans, known as bomohs. We also took inspiration from Malaysian folklores, using Toyols and demons as our main reference for enemy designs. At the same time we wanted to create a over the top, light-hearted comedic game.  Which is why certain art designs are intentionally exaggerated and often absurdly humorous while also combined with Malaysian culture inspired elements.
